What Is a Double-Blind Study

What Is a Double-Blind Study Student Resources Print Double-Blind Studies in Research By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on November 20, 2019 More in Student Resources APA Style and Writing Study Guides and Tips Careers A double-blind study is one in which neither the participants nor the experimenters know who is receiving a particular treatment. This procedure is utilized to prevent bias in research results. Double-blind studies are particularly useful for preventing bias due to demand characteristics or the placebo effect. For example, lets imagine that researchers are investigating the effects of a new drug. In a double-blind study, the researchers who interact with the participants would not know who was receiving the actual drug and who was receiving a placebo. Illustration by Emily Roberts, Verywell A Closer Look at Double-Blind Studies Let’s take a closer look at what we mean by a double-blind study and how this type of procedure works. As mentioned previously, double-blind indicates that the participants and the experimenters are unaware of who is receiving the real treatment.?? What exactly do we mean by ‘treatment?’ In a psychology experiment, the treatment is the level of the independent variable that the experimenters are manipulating. This can be contrasted with a single-blind study in which the experimenters are aware of which participants are receiving the treatment while the participants remain unaware.?? In such studies, researchers may use what is known as a placebo. A placebo is an inert substance, such as a sugar pill, that has no effect on the individual taking it. The placebo pill is given to participants who are randomly assigned to the control group. A control group is a subset of participants who are not exposed to any levels of the independent variable. This group serves as a baseline to determine if exposure to the independent variable had any significant effects. Those randomly assigned to the experimental group are given the treatment in question. Data collected from both groups are then compared to determine if the treatment had some impact on the dependent variable. All participants in the study will take a pill, but only some of them will receive the real drug under investigation. The rest of the subjects will receive an inactive placebo. With a double-blind study, the participants and the experimenters have no idea who is receiving the real drug and who is receiving the sugar pill. Double-blind experiments are simply not possible in some scenarios. For example, in an experiment looking at which type of psychotherapy is the most effective, it would be impossible to keep participants in the dark about whether or not they actually received therapy. Reasons to Use a Double-Blind Study So why would researchers opt for such a procedure? There are a couple of important reasons. First, since the participants do not know which group they are in, their beliefs about the treatment are less likely to influence the outcome.Second, since researchers are unaware of which subjects are receiving the real treatment, they are less likely to reveal accidentally subtle clues that might influence the outcome of the research.?? The double-blind procedure helps minimize the possible effects of experimenter bias.?? Such biases often involve the researchers unknowingly influencing the results during the administration or data collection stages of the experiment. Researchers sometimes have subjective feelings and biases that might have an influence on how the subjects respond or how the data is collected. In one research article, randomized double-blind placebo studies were identified as the gold standard when it comes to intervention based studies.?? One of the reasons for this include the fact that random assignment reduces the influence of confounding variables,   Example Imagine that researchers want to determine if consuming energy bars before a demanding athletic event lead to an improvement in performance. The researchers might begin by forming a pool of participants that are fairly equivalent regarding athletic ability. Some participants are randomly assigned to a control group while others are randomly assigned to the experimental group. Participants are then be asked to eat an energy bar. All of the bars are packaged the same, but some are sports bars while others are simply bar-shaped brownies. The real energy bars contain high levels of protein and vitamins, while the placebo bars do not. Because this is a double-blind study, neither the participants nor the experimenters know who is consuming the real energy bars and who is consuming the placebo bars. The participants then complete a predetermined athletic task and researchers collect data performance. Once all the data has been obtained, researchers can then compare the results of each group and determine if the independent variable had any impact on the dependent variable.?? A Word From Verywell A double-blind study can be a useful research tool in psychology and other scientific areas. By keeping both the experimenters and the participants blind, bias is less likely to influence the results of the experiment.   A double-blind experiment can be set up when the lead experimenter sets up the study but then has a colleague (such as a graduate student) collect the data from participants. The type of study that researchers decide to use, however, may depend upon a variety of factors including characteristics of the situation, the participants, and the nature of the hypothesis under examination.

The Causes of the Black Riots in the 1960s Essay - 3133 Words

The Causes of the Black Riots in the 1960s Throughout the 1960s many riots involving black people and other minority groups took place in the Eastern States of America. The 1965 riots in Watt County were one such example and demonstrated the horrific inequalities still present in America one year after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had been introduced. The riots lasted for six days, leaving 34 people dead, over a thousand injured, nearly 4,000 arrested and hundreds of buildings destroyed. There were many factors that played a part in causing the riots such as a failing education system, damaged relations between the police force and minority groups (especially black African Americans) and poor†¦show more content†¦Another reason for the discontent and anger leading up to the Watts County riots was the competition between minority groups. Rather than pulling together and uniting in their battle for equality as one might expect, they instead formed strong rivalries that lead to fierce conflict for the limited resources not already taken by white people. Also many white people preferred to hire lighter-skinned minorities, most of whom were Chicanos. This caused unrest within the black community, who were angry and upset as this meant there were very few jobs left available. Arguably the most significant single factor which contributed to the 1960s riots was the issue of policing at the time. For many years there had been negative encounters between white members of the Los Angeles police force and the African Americas and this lead to resentment within black society. Many officers were corrupt and above all racist and discrimination was widespread and apparent. A large number of officers lied in arrest reports against black citizens and some even beat and tortured Black men regardless of whether or not they had committed or were even suspected of committing any crime. Nfl Helmet-to-Helmet Hit Rule Free Essays

Let Them Play the Game Every part of the game of football means very much to me, which is why I have a passion for the game and why I researched this topic. Helmets are one of the most important pieces of safety gear a football player can have. In October 2010, a new rule was signed off to be placed in the National Football League (NFL) rule book for the safety of NFL players. We will write a custom essay sample on Nfl Helmet-to-Helmet Hit Rule or any similar topic only for you Order Now The helmet-to-helmet hit rule is as follow: using any part of the helmet to butt, spear, or ram any part of the opponent’s helmet (Azpiri). A helmet-to-helmet hit is illegal in the NFL now.The punishment for a helmet-to-helmet hit for a NFL player is being fine with a gradual increase the next times they do it and/or suspension depending on the player’s penalty history. I propose for there not to be a helmet-to-helmet hit rule. The NFL should not include the helmet-to-helmet rule, by doing so; the rule will begin by taking one of the most exciting and popular parts out of the game, hard hits. One of the reasons why I believe that is because they have safety gear on such as: helmets, shoulder pads, knee pads, and thigh pads.If they keep adding rules, pretty soon, we will be able to call it flag football without tackling. Football is a violent sport, when players sign contracts with millions of dollars attached to them; they know how violent the game has always been. Not to mention, no one has to play. If a player does not want to take a hard hit, they do not have to. I agree with Rick Cleveland when he says, â€Å"They are ruining the game we love. Football is by nature a violent sport. Nobody says you have to play. Let them play football† (Cleveland).During my research, I found many NFL players that would agree that the helmet-to-helmet rule should not be a rule. For instance, James Harrison, who plays for the Pittsburg Steelers, made a statement after a helmet-to-helmet hit on a Cleveland Brown player during a game, which read â€Å"†¦ I didn’t hit that hard, to be honest with you. When you get a guy on the ground, it’s a perfect tackle† (Harrison). As Harrison said, a tackle is a tackle, no matter where or how hard you hit them. It is to me understanding that each and every NFL football player is taught everyday to play hard and it hard. NFL players know that they are taking a massive risk of getting injured every time they step a foot on a football field, whether it be for a game or just practice. If you have the football in your possession, you should be able to take a hit anywhere on your body, even if it is on your helmet. There is no point in time where a line should be drawn. If a player makes helmet-to-helmet contact unintentionally, he should not be fined as much as if it were intentional. Helmets keep a players head safe during a game. Most NFL players still wear helmets that were made in the nineteen-nineties (Halstead). DeSean Jackson now has an anti-concussion football helmet (Chase). If helmet companies manufactured more anti-concussion helmets, players would be better off and the rule would definitely not need to be in play. Also, according to Halstead, in two thousand-thirteen, players will finally have price breaks from helmet companies to be able to buy newer safe helmets (Halstead). If players buy more anti-concussion helmets, they would not get injured as easy nor would the helmet-to-helmet hit rule need to take place. How to cite Nfl Helmet-to-Helmet Hit Rule, Papers

Tomorrows Harvest by Boards of Canada free essay sample

I was so happy when I heard that these guys were returning. I am not a longtime fan but I have listened to many of their past albums before putting this one on (mainly Geogaddi). If you have heard BoC before than you should know the sound that they usually put out is best described as nostalgic. All of their records to me sort of fit in this sound (almost like they were continually playing with the same concept since their â€Å"blueprint† album Music Has the Right to Children). Tomorrow’s Harvest to me is Boards Of Canada’s first album to completely break away from that sort of fuzzy nostalgic sound. The concept they chose was one that would destroy many childhoods, the apocalypse. Tomorrow’s Harvest is meant to show the end of everything, the obliteration of happy memories or the prevention of them entirely. From the first track onwards I kept my mind open and allowed it to follow the music. We will write a custom essay sample on Tomorrows Harvest by Boards of Canada or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This is really the best way to enjoy Boards Of Canada since their music is extremely visionary and relies on this heavily. If you aren’t much into picturing things when you listen to music then you might have trouble enjoying this. Gemini, opens up with what sounds like an intro to a feature film. I picture a family gathering around the television to spend time together. As the synths grow and become more unsettling I picture their show being interrupted by a warning. The youngest child then goes to the window to see what is going on. What he sees is the beginning of the apocalypse that Boc will continue to depict. As the album progresses so does whatever storyline you have in your head. It’s this emersion that really shocks me about Boards Of Canada and just how easily lost you can become in their music. My favorite song on the album, Jacquard Causeway, is where you can see this emersion shine brightest. It has a sort of feel that their past records have but it still fits the apocalyptic theme so well. I highly suggest listening to songs out of context though because I think that this album can be enjoyed more if experienced as a whole. The single that they chose, Reach For the Dead, is really the only song that works well just by itself mainly because it represents the album as a whole, remembering the dead instead of your childhood (well Palace Posy kinda work well without the others as well). I guess thats the best way to explain it, instead of your childhood Boards Of Canada are more fixated on death this time around. There were a couple weak spots on this album†¦ but I’m gonna skip over that since I feel that these weaker tracks only really feel weak when taken out of the context of the album. I mean if all of the songs sounded like Jacquard Causeway or Reach for The Dead then I would probably get very bored very quickly.
